She works from Maple Brook Studio in Connecticut's Northeast corner.
ABOUT ALINE HOFFMAN
Making art has been the focal point and driving force of Ms. Hoffman's life from her earliest recollections. By her 10th birthday, she was creating distinctive pen-and-ink drawings of animals and trees with old-time scratch pens. "And once I discovered technical pens, I was in artistic heaven," she says, "with the pen being an extension of my fingers. Black-and-white was so pure and clear. Details of trees excited me as I created every branch I could. Now in my 60s, I still feel great pleasure when I hold my pen, creating gracefully detailed landscapes, seascapes, people, and animals -- works I call 'emotional realism.'"
In the late 1960s, Ms. Hoffman graduated from the Art Department at NYU where she continued to revel in Realism while her professors encouraged Cubism and other abstract approaches. Following her graduation, she began exploring Abstract Expressionism - composition, color and balance; and understanding that each new line, brush stroke, or new mark she made created a new problem to be resolved. "I loved the challenge, yet returned to pen and ink when I began to wonder if I could still draw realistic images."
It was 1989 when Ms. Hoffman attended a show of works by Charles Chu, an experience that turned her on to Chinese Brush painting. Twenty years later, she continues to do Chinese Brush paintings that are vibrant, elegant, and filled with excitement and motion. Presently, Ms. Hoffman enjoys working in two completely differing styles: Chinese Brush Paintings on rice and textured papers and abstract explorations in pastels on textured papers, a series she calls Feminine Mystique.
